NEW Allhiphop.com Interview: Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins –“R&B is on its Way Back!”

Read 'Rodney Jerkins: R&B is Back!'

The true definition of a super producer, Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins is the man behind some of the biggest R&B songs of the last decade. Having produced hit singles for the likes of Michael and Janet Jackson, Destiny’s Child, Jennifer Lopez, Mary J. Blige, Brandy and The Pussycat Dolls to name just a few, the industry veteran can boast more production credits and a far more impressive resume than his mere 32 years would suggest. With his latest effort, pop sensation Lady Gaga’s new Beyoncé-assisted single ‘Telephone,’ already climbing up the charts ahead of its official release, he seems to be starting this decade with just as much promise as he did the last.

Having spoken with Darkchild as he was putting the finishing touches on ‘Telephone’ for Gaga, who he praises for her “character” and writing abilities, his incredible knowledge of the music industry and love of creative experimentalism became immediately clear. It really is no wonder why this year seems destined to mark yet another chapter in his already impressive success story. “R&B is on its way back,” proclaims Jerkins passionately, his excitement clearly fueled by the plethora of the pioneering projects that he is currently working on. The genre is certainly taking a new direction and Darkchild’s musically diverse productions will undoubtedly play a major role in its development….

Jamie Who? Drake & Kanye West Take Over ‘Digital Girl’

‘Digital Girl’ is the fouth single from Jamie Foxx’s ‘Intuition’ album. It is not Foxx, however, that makes this track stand out to the hip hop community, rather the features by Drake and Kanye West.

Drake fever seems to have really set in leading up to the fourth quarter of 2009. Having inked a deal with Lil Wayne’s Young Money Entertainment, the Canadian rapper is set to release his first studio album ‘Thank Me Later’ this winter. Drake mixtape ‘So Far Gone,’ which spawned several singles, has only increased the buzz surrounding his highly-anticipated debut album. Whilst it could be argued that his performance on this track wasn’t exactly outstanding, especially when compared with West, it demonstrates the young rapper’s industry presence and gives an insight into where the industry is heading.

Kanye West, on the other hand, provides the highlight to this single. Infamously unpredictable when it comes to musical styles, West seems to be enjoying his return to rapping. Although this single is hardly ‘Ye at his best, I would consider it a warm up. With several high profile collaborations and a number of other projects, the next chapter of the Kanye West story is unlikely to disappoint.

The Chris Brown Show Must Go On…

RECAP

The California Supreme Court has denied a request to delay R&B superstar Chris Brown’s preliminary hearing. The petition, which was filed by Brown’s lawyer, had previously also been denied by the appeals court.  The 20 year old singer is due to appear in court for the hearing next Monday (22nd June), where the judge will decide if there is sufficient evidence to proceed with the case.

Brown was arrested earlier this year for allegedly assaulting his then girlfriend Rihanna, after an argument between the pair escalated following a pre-Grammy party at the Beverly Hills Hotel.  Rihanna was treated for a number of injuries, allegedly including cuts, bruises and bite wounds, at the Cedars Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles.  There has been a significant media interest following the incident, although it would seem that the assault accusations have done Brown’s career little damage, aside from the loss of several endorsements.

Brown and Rihanna were both in attendance during the NBA Finals game 4 in Orlando last week, therefore sparking rumours of a reunion, despite the fact that they did not show up nor sit together. It is likely that Rihanna will be called on to testify during the hearing next week.
