Wyclef Jean Appeal following Haiti Earthquake

Wyclef Jean

Wyclef Jean has given a statement after a major earthquake, measuring 7.0 on the richter scale, hit his homeland Haiti. 3 Million people are reported to have been affected by the disaster and casualities are expected to be high. Official representatives for the Haitian consul in New York fear that it could be several days before anybody truly can gauge the scale of the devastation.

Humanitarian and Hip Hop musician Wyclef stated yesterday:

“Haiti today faced a natural disaster of unprecedented proportion, an earthquake unlike anything the country has ever experienced.

The magnitude 7.0 earthquake – and several very strong aftershocks – struck only 10 miles from Port-au-Prince.

I cannot stress enough what a human disaster this is, and idle hands will only make this tragedy worse. The over 2 million people in Port-au-Prince tonight face catastrophe alone. We must act now.

President Obama has already said that the U.S. stands ‘ready to assist’ the Haitian people. The U.S. Military is the only group trained and prepared to offer that assistance immediately. They must do so as soon as possible. The international community must also rise to the occasion and help the Haitian people in every way possible.”

Wyclef’s charity Yele Haiti are currently asking those interested to please do one of two things: Either text “Yele” to 501501, which will automatically donate $5 to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund (the amount will be charged to your mobile phone bill), or for those outside the US please visit Yele.org and click on DONATE.

Our hearts go out to those affected by the earthquake, hopefully between us all we can truly make a difference and relieve some of the suffering.

Please go to yele.org and DONATE now

For more information on Yele Haiti you can either visit yele.org or read my recent Wyclef interview, where he explained some of the ideals and goals of the charity in depth.

Obama Wins Nobel Peace Prize

It was announced today that the current President of the United States has won the honorable Nobel Peace prize. President Obama’s victory came as a surprise to many, as the nomination deadline came less than two weeks into his presidency. The prize was reportedly awarded for Obama’s focus on improving relations with the Muslim world and his initiatives to reduce nuclear arms; the ‘change in global mood’ that succeeded his presidential victory was also a key factor in the decision.

Following the announcement, the Nobel Committee chairman stated, “Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future.” The committee also praised the President for a saparking a “new climate in international politics.”

In a statement from the Whitehouse, President Obama explaining that he “will accept this award as a call to action,” acknowledging that the initiatives still remain largely unfulfilled at this point. He also mentioned that he felt he did not actually deserve the prize, due to this fact.

Regardless of whether or not you feel Obama deserved to win this prestigeous award, it must be said that in recent times no other world leader has succeeded in bringing unity to the Western world and few have even attempted to ease tensions with the Muslim world. This moment marks a significant change in not only international politics but also signals a step in the right direction for the global community. Hopefully he will do as promised and take this prize as fuel for some real change that we can also see, not just believe in.

Sex And The City 2 – The Return of Carrie Fever!

Women worldwide can finally begin to look forward to the next instalment of female cult favourite Sex & the City. The cast of the second SATC movie began filming in New York this week after months of speculation.

Following the success of the first SATC movie, the cast and production were keen to get the ball rolling with the sequel, which will reportedly focus on the aftermath of the recession. The movie is reportedly set in both New York and London and explores the fate of the characters during the financial crisis.

Both Mr Big, Carrie’s businessman husband played by Chris Noth, and the oversexed PR genius Samantha Jones, portrayed by Kim Cattrall, are depicted as having lost out big time during the recession.

The SATC team have been quick to explain that despite the content of the movie, the wardrobe (a significant attraction of the film) will be far from recession-reflective.

Yes Obama IS American!

Barack Obama was never going to have an easy journey as President of the United States; there has been much speculation from an increasingly vocal number of  so-called ‘birthers,’ who argue that Obama was not born in the USA and is therefore not eligible to run the country.

Health Director Dr. Chiyome Fukimo released a statement, explaining “I have seen the original vital records maintained on file by the Hawaii State Department of Health verifying Barack Hussein Obama was born in Hawaii and is a natural-born American citizen. I have nothing further to add to this statement or my original statement issued in October 2008 over eight months ago.”

State officials in Hawaii are hoping the statement will quieten both this outspoken minority and the media interest in the rumour. So for anyone who still doubts Obama’s nationality, yes he IS American; can we all move on now and deal with some actual issues?
