Langston Hughes – Harlem

Perhaps one of the most powerful poems written by one of the greatest writers to ever grace this world with his talents, ‘Harlem’ provides an insight into the dangers posed by a “dream deferred.”

Langston Hughes

Harlem – Langston Hughes

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore—
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over—
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?

Without people like Langston Hughes at the forefront of the Harlem Renaissance there would be no Hip Hop.
